I had a wander over Penistone Hill at Haworth today, to view the Wild Uplands art installed on the moorland as part of the Bradford 2025 City of Culture programme.
Personally, I love public art, even if I don’t necessarily understand the concepts behind it. Steve Messam’s Tower looks from a distance like a Pennine Stonehenge, until you approach it to find it’s clad in raw sheep’s fleece in recognition of the area’s textile history. Monira al Qadiri’s The Children of a Smokeless Fire’s fantasy figures are a nod to the infamous Cottingley Fairies,
while Meherunnisa Asad of Studio Lél’s 99 Butterflies, sadly already the target of vandalism, proved an ideal picnic spot for a couple.
Vanessa da Silva’s Muamba Posy add colour to the parched browns and greens of the moors.
